What happens at an acupuncture consultation?

Acupuncture is inherently relaxing, the feeling is like being unwound from the inside out so that a deep state of calm and rejuvenation is reached. At an initial consultation I take a detailed record of your health history and will ask questions about the symptoms you are currently experiencing. Then the fine tuning of diagnosis begins. A properly trained acupuncturist will be able to discern a vast amount of information from what is called pulse diagnosis. The radial artery at the wrist is particularly useful, and any organ imbalances are obvious to a trained practitioner. The abdomen and any areas of pain or discomfort may also be palpated if necessary. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and I will always discuss my observations with you and will explain the approach to treatment I would like to take. The treatment starts by placing needles (usually two or three) into specific acupuncture points around the body. The needles used are so fine that this is actually not painful. Generally the points selected are on the arms and legs, below the knee or the elbow. With the needles in place the first thing you find is a feeling of deep relaxation developing. This type of relaxation is in my experience unique to acupuncture, and is why I describe acupuncture as a healing experience unlike any other. A treatment lasts for around 30 minutes with the total consultation time being around 45 minutes for a standard consultation. After an initial consultation it is easier to estimate how many treatments will be necessary. If there are areas I have not covered here that you would like more information about then send your questions to info@wesleysmith.com.au. |
